My First Women in Games Event

I have started attending the Women in Games ambassador Hosted events. I stumbled upon them completely randomly browsing through the feed on LinkedIn. One of the awesome leaders Riot Games that I follow was congratulated on becoming the Ambassador and announced her first event she would be hosting in July.

I was not 100% sure about the format and the style of this event, but signed up anyway. The curious part is they are described as ‘talks over coffee’ and are limited to up 8 guests, so I was worried showing up on the call where everyone knew each other and was on the first name basis.

Turned out all of us were meeting for the first time over zoom. I was the only person outside of LA, but apart from that, the other 4 women leaders were describing very familiar career and work situations.

I enjoyed an hour with great minds: some in the gaming or entertainment industry, others in the consulting, and venture capital. It was a pretty re-energizing experience and I got a positive charge that lasted for another 2 days. Not to mention that I have made some good connections.

My main take-away from that particular was that:

a. women can feel rather lonely in leadership positions

b. networking does not have to be in-person - virtual space can be just as efficient;

c. the more us women participate in these events the richer and wider will this network become;

d. the negative trend of over-competitiveness among females within one company needs to be corrected.
